I appreciate your creation of Karabiner Elements to support Sierra, but would really like to see a way to get the PC-like "F2" function back when using Excel on the Mac.

Looks like that's not yet part of Elements. Thank you! Ah, just noticed I can do this from your "Function Keys" tab. It's working. But I noticed this key remap can no longer be restricted to only when Excel is the active app. That was important to be able to still increase brightness when outside of Excel. Maybe I'm just missing how to do that too.

It's called BetterTouchTool. Working perfectly in Sierra. I'm also able to get this to work by mapping the F2 key to "f2" in the dropdown. Could someone please point out how to make this mapping in BetterTouchTool? Hi, sorry for bringing this up here and appreciate your help.

Unfortunately it's still not working because I'd like the Brightness key to be the shortcut, not F2. Perhaps BetterTouchTool can't do this after all? F2 actually edits a cell as it should.

For example, Fn-F10 will perform the action assigned to the F10 key instead of toggling mute on or off. A setting in System Preferences, in the Keyboard pane, controls default behavior for function keys. The setting is a checkbox labeled "Use all F1, F2, etc. When unchecked, function keys will perform as described in 1 above.

If you check the checkbox, F1 - F12 will behave standard function keys, and you will need to press Fn in order to perform the actions indicated by special icons.

In general, unless you are using Excel all day on a Mac, you will probably find it more convenient to leave the default behavior alone and learn to use the Fn key for certain shortcuts in Excel. This is because it's nice to be able to access the Mac dashboard, brightness, and volume without having to press Fn at the same time.

You can change the keyboard shortcuts that are assigned to function keys in the Keyboard Shortcuts pane. I just upgraded a month ago to a newer MacBook Pro. I have always used Karabiner to remap the Number keys to function keys to use for Paragraph style shortcuts.
