I found it really helpful because it was the right balance between strength and simplicity. Flash forward to present day and I have converted over to a new MacBook and love it. I have everything I want with the exception of Visual Basic.
Being a Microsoft product, there of course is no OSX version. I'm cool with starting from scratch, I've done it a bunch of times with java, python, etc. Unfortunately no.
You're just going to have to install a virtual machine and run Windows to get what you need. Now it's called Xojo. I just wanted to say since you don't mind starting from scratch AppleScript is totally worth learning. It is super powerful and relatively easy to learn. Both AppleScript and Automator are powerful on their own but together they can do some pretty impressive stuff. With AppleScript I just don't like the fact that it's natural language based. It doesn't seem very logical and makes it so much harder to learn.
AppleScript is very hard to learn. Unlike a lot of languages where you can just pick things up as you go, you absolutely need to buy more than one book on AppleScript. I had a harder time learning AppleScript than x86 assembler.

It's almost not worth it these days, given that applications are slowly dropping support for it. Aside from the fact that that technote deals with embedding the Python interpreter in an Objective-C program, so you can write extensions and plugins in Python; and aside from the fact that "native app written in Python" is an oxymoron; I mean to say that Xcode itself doesn't have any features that specifically aid in Python programming, such as autocomplete or other typical IDE features.
Maybe look at Xcode and Objective C. If you have no desire to be cross platform, then xcode is the way to go. Otherwise look at python and maybe qt. RealBasic Xojo is the closest thing you'll get.
